Learn More About Park Church
The humble origins of the Park United Methodist Church began in October of 1901 in a carpenter’s shop on Liberty Place. During this time, The First Methodist Church of Hoboken appointed a committee of two, and soon after Park United Methodist Episcopal Church was born and erected to glorify the Kingdom of God with the children and young adults in mind. The committee members had their first meeting in the First Methodist Church of Hoboken on Saturday March 1, 1902. They passed a resolution to have religious meeting in Weehawken and Mr. Henry Pope offered the use of his parlors, located at his home on 8 First St. Clifton Park. This was held on March 9, 1902 and was the first religious meeting under this committee.
In 1902, Park United Methodist Episcopal Church purchased the lot on what today is 51 Clifton Terrace. The four lots were purchased from The Camp Estate lots and were 100×110 for $4000 with a down payment of $800. The dedication for the building on this property was on June 20th,1909.
Currently, according to our research, this is the biggest freestanding wood framed structure building in Weehawken. Its memorial painted glass windows are an outstanding and historic feature of the church and were created by the renowned Payne-Spiers Studios of Paterson. These windows are made of fine quality hand-blown antique glass beautifully painted and kiln-fired by expert craftsmen.
This church is a wonderful and historic place that is in service to the community and seeks to be a haven of spiritual formation and care for those in need.
